National News: Under the much-anticipated defense agreement between India and Russia for the S-400 air defense system, Russia has now assured that it will deliver the remaining two squadrons by 2026 and 2027. Notably, this is the same advanced missile defense system that proved highly effective during Operation Sindoor, giving a decisive edge to India and severely limiting Pakistan’s aerial capabilities.
The delay in the supply of the fourth and fifth squadrons has been primarily due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However, the delivery timeline now appears back on track. The matter was recently discussed during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) defense ministers’ meeting in Qingdao, where India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met Russian Deputy Defense Minister Andrei Belousov for bilateral talks.
Following the meeting, Rajnath Singh posted on platform X (formerly Twitter):
“Had a meaningful discussion on further strengthening the India-Russia defense partnership.”
Back in 2018, India entered into a ₹40,000 crore agreement with Russia for the procurement of five squadrons of the cutting-edge S-400 Triumph air defense system. The original delivery timeline aimed for completion by the end of 2023. However, to date, India has received only three squadrons. As per recent updates from official sources, the fourth squadron is slated for delivery in 2026, while the final fifth squadron is expected to arrive in 2027.
The S-400 Triumph is considered one of the world’s most advanced and powerful air defense systems. Some of its standout features include
The Indian Air Force has strategically deployed the received squadrons along the northwestern and eastern borders, enhancing India’s preparedness against both Pakistan and China. This layered and long-range air defense has significantly fortified Indian skies and boosted deterrence in volatile regions.
Once all five squadrons are in place, India’s air defense will effectively function as a three-pronged shield, capable of intercepting threats from the east, west, and north. This not only marks a major upgrade in India’s military capability but also reinforces its long-standing strategic defense ties with Russia.
